Riley 21 - July 3, 2021

CrossFit Asheville (CFA) is Western North Carolina’s first CrossFit gym. Since 2009, CrossFit Asheville has been dedicated to providing a culture of community and growth.

Kevin Westmoreland (Lauren’s father), one of the Riley Howell Foundation Fund board members, joined the gym in 2015. Shortly thereafter, Riley and Lauren joined as well. Riley was a student of physiology and how to use weight to be stronger and more fit. CrossFit appealed to him and his interest in building muscle.

He made many friends at CFA and loved the group workouts of the day (WOD). One of the types of group workouts is a Hero workout, a tribute to a fallen first responder or member of the military who died while serving honorably in the line of duty. These workouts are performed throughout the year in CrossFit gyms across the world. The Riley 21 was created in honor of Riley’s actions on April 30, 2019. It is one of the few Hero workouts created for a civilian.

The Riley 21 first took place in the summer of 2019 and dozens of gyms and hundreds of people around the world participated.

This year the Riley 21 takes place on July 3, 2021 with all proceeds going to the Riley Howell Foundation Fund. Riley’s home gym, CrossFit Asheville, is holding registration for the event now. Sign up for heat times and reserve your t-shirt at this link.

If you live in another city, state or country check with your local CrossFit gym to see if they are part of the Riley 21 Hero workout on July 3.
